Advanced Mammography for Breast Health
At Margaret Lawrence University Teaching Hospital, we understand the importance of proactive breast health. Our Mammography unit is a dedicated, private, and comfortable space equipped with advanced technology designed for the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases. We believe that early detection is the key to successful treatment outcomes.
What is Mammography?
Mammography is a specialized, low-dose X-ray imaging technique used to examine the breast. It plays a central role in screening for breast cancer in women who have no apparent symptoms (screening mammography) and in diagnosing breast disease in women who are experiencing symptoms such as a lump, pain, or nipple discharge (diagnostic mammography).
Our Technology: 3D Digital Breast Tomosynthesis
We utilize state-of-the-art 3D Digital Breast Tomosynthesis, a revolutionary form of mammography that produces a three-dimensional image of the breast. This technology offers significant advantages:
- Greater Accuracy: By creating a 3D image, our radiologists can examine the breast tissue one thin layer at a time. This makes it easier to detect abnormalities and reduces the chances of false positives that can be caused by overlapping tissue in standard 2D mammograms.
- Earlier Detection: 3D mammography has been shown to detect invasive breast cancers earlier than conventional 2D mammography.
- Improved Clarity: This technology is particularly beneficial for women with dense breast tissue, providing clearer images for a more confident diagnosis.
- Fewer Callbacks: The increased accuracy of 3D mammography often reduces the need for patients to be called back for additional imaging.
